Jeff Bezos Sees Giant Space Stations Serving as Humanity’s Future Residences

Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon and Blue Origin, envisions a day in which millions, if not a trillion, people live around the solar system in enormous, rotating space stations rather than on planets. During a December 14 discussion with podcaster and computer scientist Lex Fridman, Mr. Bezos said that he thought our solar system had the resources to support such a massive society.

According to Forbes, Mr. Bezos expressed his desire to see “a trillion humans living in the solar system.” Considering that number of individuals, Mr. Bezos said, we would always have “1,000 Mozarts and 1,000 Einsteins” and the solar system would always be “full of life, intelligence, and energy.”

This kind of society might “easily support” itself thanks to solar system resources, but it could only exist on “giant space stations,” according to Mr. Bezos.

“He said that enormous space stations are the only way to realize his goal. “The planetary surfaces are just way too small unless you turn them into giant space stations.”

Space stations, sometimes called O’Neill cylinders or colonies after physicist Gerard K. O’Neill, who first suggested the idea, are advantageous, as Mr. Bezos emphasized. Bezos claims that these stations are superior than planetary existence in many ways.

“Compared to planetary surfaces, they offer several benefits. To simulate regular earth gravity, rotate them. You are free to arrange them as you see fit,” he continued.
